Enlightenment – Religion – Knowledge
The Transformation of the Religious and the Rational in the Modern Period

The Center of Excellence, "Enlightenment – Religion – Knowledge" takes as its objective the interdisciplinary investigation of the transformation of the religious and the rational in the modern period. The historical focal point is the eighteenth century, yet a broader definition of modernity is always in view: a modernity which aims to generate knowledge through an intensive, unceasing exploration of standards of rationality in all dimensions of human life, not least of which, the religious.

The Center of Excellence was established through an initiative of the state of Saxony-Anhalt in October, 2006 and is one of the Centers for the Humanities at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg.
